AS A FACTORY OWNER OR FACILITY MANAGER HAVE YOU CONSIDERED the advantage to gain when you retrofit your factory's or facility ten years plus lighting system to an energy efficient and brighter lighting system?

TRUTH IS most factories and commercial facilities in Nigeria rely heavily on fluorescent light and our findings shows majority of these fluorescent tubes are highly rated in wattage and have defective ballast that consumes tons of electricity while producing poor lighting.

Fluorescent lighting has a very high penetration in the industrial and commercial sector. The most common types of fluorescent lighting are the 4 foot, 40 Watt tubes and the 2 foot, 20 Watt tubes. The 40 Watt lamp can readily be replaced with a 25 Watt lamp with the same lighting output, without any modifications. Similarly the 20 Watt lamp can be replaced with an 18 Watt lamp. The current retail prices of the high efficiency lamps are similar or slightly lower than the standard lamps and hence, financial incentives would not be required.

MASS SCALE REPLACEMENT OF INCANDESCENT BULBS

IN NIGERIA, YOU'D BE AMAZED TO FIND THAT AT LEAST IN EVERY 3 HOMES YOU VISIT THERE WILL BE TWO USERS OF INCANDESCENT BULBS.

 It is as common as black skin is common because these bulbs are easy, cheap and readily available for the use of common people who have no idea how much electrical energy these incandescent bulbs consume.

AS A MATTER OF FACT, in energy management parlance, THESE BULBS ARE CALLED ENERGY GUZZLERS because of their high energy consuming configuration. 

they come in 200 watts, 100 watts and 60 watts ranges and consume energy according to their size. 

Thank Heavens for the recent mass installation of prepaid meters to Lagos consumers as this led to drastic reduction in the use of these light bulbs and instead has led to the adoption of CFL bulbs that come with 25 watts rating and less.

Turn Off Lights

Sounds obvious and simple enough right? Well … not as obvious and simple as it might seem. According to one survey by Lutron, 90% of Americans know of someone who forgets to turn out lights when leaving a room. Mind you,

That's in America where there is power sufficiency. In Nigeria, it is very common to leave lights on even when it is NOT IN USE and this eats money the way termites eat wood. 

WHAT TO DO:

Do you have signs next to light switches in conference rooms to turn out lights? Have you considered motion-activated lights in little-used hallways or common areas, that will turn off after a period of time and turn on only when someone enters the space? 

Think of ways to remind people to turn off lights, or have lights turn on and off automatically.

CONSTANT ELECTRICITY IN AFRICA

The title of my post will sure interest a lot of readers from Africa, especially Nigeria where I live and where we pray for the miracle of constant electricity. This miracle, daily importuned from Zeus, god of lightning and sky (at least to the Greek) , is nothing short of a mirage for Africans who, asides from material poverty suffers greatly from energy poverty. If you live in Lagos, Kaduna, Port Harcourt, and perhaps Kumasi, Soweto, then you will understand what it is to be deprived of electricity. Our brothers and sisters in Europe, Asia and America may not really understand.
From lighting your room, to watching your favorite TV show, to charging your phone to browse on the internet, to navigating a well lighted road at night, the need for electricity in Nigeria and Africa gets critical by the day. It is hard, very hard to still live in "darkness" in today's age when electricity can be generated from several sources. I cringe inside to still hear children scream "UP NEPA" in the hoods of Lagos whenever power is returned from its holders. It is sad, very sad that we still ration electricity in Nigeria in the 21st Century, when school children in China can generate electricity from the simplest elements. You just need not imagine how much Nigerians spend on fuel for generators. It is sheer wickedness on the poor people of the country.

What is the way forward? Can the new government deliver on its promises to power Nigeria and make her industrialize as all of us hope? Will President Elect General Muhammad Buhari take Nigeria further in the drive to become a power sufficient nation by year 2020? Like the great Bob Marley once sang: Time Will Tell.
In our drive to modernize Africa and alleviate energy poverty keenly felt in the ghettos, Zeus Energy Limited is working on innovative solutions to power SME's in the low scale areas of Nigeria. We are presently conducting energy audits and analysis of selected SME outlets, to know their total energy requirement in order to build bespoke energy units for them. This we intend to do in partnership with stakeholders in the energy industry and other development partners willing to work with Nigeria in achieving sustainable power. Constant electricity can be a reality in Africa. We need to believe it first.
