Environmental benefits of DSM 

As part of the City of Cape Town's initiative to improve energy efficiency in government buildings, an energy audit was carried out to determine potential energy saving opportunities. As a result of the audit, certain measures were implemented to reduce energy consumption including timers on electric geysers so that water is only heated when needed, replacement of inefficient urns with insulated electric water heating systems, installation of energy efficient lighting and installation of solar water heaters. Resulting from these measures, 20 per cent savings in electricity were achieved per month (equal to 24 476 kWh/month) equivalent to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of about 323 tons of CO2 per year. The next step will be to introduce measures to influence behavioral changes in staff energy use to reduce consumption further.

Different timers allow pre-programming for different periods. Timers most commonly can be programmed for a week or for every day of the year. Most timers come with battery back-up and an override facility in case air conditioning is needed outside of the programmed hours.

MASS SCALE REPLACEMENT OF INCANDESCENT BULBS

IN NIGERIA, YOU'D BE AMAZED TO FIND THAT AT LEAST IN EVERY 3 HOMES YOU VISIT THERE WILL BE TWO USERS OF INCANDESCENT BULBS.

 It is as common as black skin is common because these bulbs are easy, cheap and readily available for the use of common people who have no idea how much electrical energy these incandescent bulbs consume.

The last time we mentioned the simplest one: SWITCH OFF THE LIGHTS 

Today, the idea is to upgrade our electrical system to Energy Star Rated types.

Whether it’s the refrigerator in the lunch room, the exhaust fans in the bathrooms, the printers in the work space, the HVAC system or the lighting fixtures — it may pay to upgrade to energy efficient models, especially if you have a lot of older equipment. Energy Star is an independent rating system for energy efficient products; so look for the Energy Star symbol and rating.

Every electrical equipment with this symbol and rating have been engineered to consume less energy and by implication, guzzles less money.

Turn Off Lights
