COP 21- A WORLD AGENDA FOR CHANGE
I am happy to bring the year on the blog to a close by reflecting on Climate Change Conference held in Paris recently where world leaders converged to further the talks on global warming. Our very own President Buhari was in attendance, which underscored the importance of resolutions reached in the conference for a gas-flaring nation like Nigeria.
In the conference, Nigeria pledged to drastically cut down on its CO2 emission, setting year 2030 as the target to reach this lofty goal. This is a dream that Nigeria has been pursuing for long but knowing President Buhari as a man of his words, I want to be hopeful that it won't be a pipe dream. More so, I recently read in the news that Federal Government had placed a ban on the importation of "I-Better-Pass-My-Neighbour" generators as a means of cutting down on the tonnes of CO2 released into the Nigerian space. If these measures can be sustained, Nigeria can become a honourable member of responsible nations of the world that cares about Nature and the future of Earth.
I must also comment on the appointment of HE Mr. Raji Fashola as the honourable Minister of Power, Works and Housing .Going by his antecedent, I am looking forward to a vibrant power sector driven by favorable government policies and constructive oversight implementations. The Discos must gear up and work on building infrastructures that will serve the populace while the populace in turn must be ready to pay for the power (electricity) supplied to them. Like the Honourable Minister said, I expect a tariff regime that is reflective of the economic times we live now- conscionable, fair and cost reflective.
As a new year beckons, I urge us all to take a moment to remember to conserve energy in our everyday activities. Each time you save energy, you inculcate a culture of savings that will at the end make you a millionaire. This is fact that I want you to keep in mind as you celebrate Xmas and New Year.
