The need for energy audit

Energy Audit and Sustainable Energy- Are they connected?

I was once asked if Nigeria can ever enjoy uninterrupted power supply. Believe me, if you have lived in Nigeria for as long as I have and witnessed the constant blackouts I have witnessed in my life time, then  you too will have a reason to doubt whether we can ever be self sufficient in energy production. But I believe we can.

First, the revolution began years ago, not yesterday. Starting from President Olusegun Obasanjo who laid down the original roadmap to energy sector reform and then continued by President Goodluck Jonathan who has made substantial investments in power sector and recorded laudable achievements, the strive already made in the power sector is enough to guarantee that electric power will be stable in Nigeria.

Again, recent developments in the power sector points in this self sufficiency direction. The declaration of TEM II, to take effect from February 1, 2015 represents Federal Government's resolve to jump start the power sector reform set to take Nigerians out of unceasing black out and set us on the path of unprecedented development.

In this direction, it is very essential for stakeholders in energy industry to conduct energy audit of the Nigerian populace to know EXACTLY the nation's energy need. I know for a fact that it is only Lagos State that has a verifiable energy audit report, undertaken by Lagos Electricity Board years ago. This laudable effort should be emulated by other states of the Federation, Utility companies, Transmission companies and other stakeholders in the power/ energy industry. It is in the spirit of Negawatt Revolution in Africa!

When we know how much energy is required to power Nigeria's Industrial revolution, then we can know for certain how to distribute, manage and innovate on our energy needs. Energy audit also helps organisations to cut costs on energy usage and it is in line with international best practices.

And in this regards, Zeus Energy Limited is ready to partner with interested stakeholders in conducting standard energy audit for the nation. We have done it before, having participated in Lagos State Energy Audit and are anxious to contribute our technical quota to Power Sector reform in Nigeria.

Do you have questions about energy audit or power sector reform in Nigeria? Feel free to ask me.
