Environmental benefits of DSM 

As part of the City of Cape Town's initiative to improve energy efficiency in government buildings, an energy audit was carried out to determine potential energy saving opportunities. As a result of the audit, certain measures were implemented to reduce energy consumption including timers on electric geysers so that water is only heated when needed, replacement of inefficient urns with insulated electric water heating systems, installation of energy efficient lighting and installation of solar water heaters. Resulting from these measures, 20 per cent savings in electricity were achieved per month (equal to 24 476 kWh/month) equivalent to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of about 323 tons of CO2 per year. The next step will be to introduce measures to influence behavioral changes in staff energy use to reduce consumption further.

HOW CAN THIS BE MANAGED?

Programmable time controls can easily be retro-fitted onto most types of air conditioning equipment and they ensure that the equipment only operates during the hours that it is required. Timers can reduce energy consumption and energy costs to the customer by ensuring that air conditioners are not running unnecessarily during non-business hours, such as overnight or on weekends and public holidays. Different timers allow pre-programming for different periods. Timers most commonly can be programmed for a week or for every day of the year. Multiple channel timers are also available so that other equipment, such as lights, photocopiers etc. can also be controlled. Most timers come with battery back-up and an override facility in case air conditioning is needed outside of the programmed hours.

AS A FACTORY OWNER OR FACILITY MANAGER HAVE YOU CONSIDERED the advantage to gain when you retrofit your factory's or facility ten years plus lighting system to an energy efficient and brighter lighting system?

TRUTH IS most factories and commercial facilities in Nigeria rely heavily on fluorescent light and our findings shows majority of these fluorescent tubes are highly rated in wattage and have defective ballast that consumes tons of electricity while producing poor lighting. 

OUR SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM IS SIMPLE AND AFFORDABLE:

Fluorescent lighting has a very high penetration in the industrial and commercial sector. The most common types of fluorescent lighting are the 4 foot, 40 Watt tubes and the 2 foot, 20 Watt tubes. The 40 Watt lamp can readily be replaced with a 25 Watt lamp with the same lighting output, without any modifications. Similarly the 20 Watt lamp can be replaced with an 18 Watt lamp. The current retail prices of the high efficiency lamps are similar or slightly lower than the standard lamps and hence, financial incentives would not be required.
