I read in the news today a senior official from the power sector claiming trillions of Naira would be needed to bring constant electricity to Nigerians. Well he lied not. The fact is that cumulative neglect of power infrastructure in Nigeria for over 5 decades has left a huge gap that would take a lot of capital investment to make up for. But is that enough reason for despair or to have a defeatist outlook? I make bold to say NO!
My reason for taking this position is not naive or unrealistic. I know for a fact as an energy law expert, especially as a disciple of renewable energy, that there is enough energy for Nigerians to adopt and convert to productive use if only we are "smart" enough to tap from this illimitable energy. I am talking about nothing but the negawatt power plant that is readily available in the cloud for our use. Yes, I am talking about the Virtual Power Plant (VPP)- a 1000000 Negawatt Energy Bank trapped in space, waiting for our power engineers to explore.
Negawatt Power Plant will fast track the federal government's strive to provide constant electricity to Nigerians. We just have to take up the initiatives. Learning to adopt Energy Management System (EnMS) and its green regime of conservation practices will bring the nation into light because renewable energy is the way to go especially in Nigeria where there is deficiency in energy and the citizens are impatient to have constant electricity. Global initiatives like incorporating ISO 50001 into Nigerian energy sector is a step in the right direction and I am glad for the great work GIZ through Nigerian Energy Support Program (NESP) is doing to extend the frontiers of energy efficiency in Nigeria. The collaborative work between Germany, European Union and Nigeria in this regards is just on point I must say.
